A Journey to Athgala : The Heart of a Legacy

 

Athgala, the elephant stables of the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic) in Kandy, is far more than just a home for elephants. It is a living testament to centuries of tradition and a crucial part of Sri Lanka's cultural and religious heritage. The majestic tuskers and elephants of Athgala are the revered guardians of a sacred duty, especially during the world-renowned Kandy Esala Perahera.

The Sacred Role of the Temple Tuskers

The elephants of Athgala are not ordinary animals; they are held in great reverence and are an integral part of the temple's daily rituals and annual events. Their most distinguished role is in the Esala Perahera, an annual festival that pays homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. The honor of carrying the golden casket, which holds a replica of the relic, is bestowed upon a specially selected tusker known as the "Maligawa Tusker." This magnificent animal, adorned in a lavishly embroidered cloak, leads the grand procession through the streets of Kandy, a sight that captivates thousands of devotees and spectators.

මහනුවර ශ්‍රී දළදා මාලිගාවේ ඇත් පන්තිය වන ඇත්ගාල  යනු හුදෙක් අලින්ගේ වාසස්ථානයක් පමණක් නොවේ. එය සියවස් ගණනාවක් පැරණි සම්ප්‍රදායන්ට ජීවමාන සාක්ෂියක් වන අතර, ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ සංස්කෘතික හා ආගමික උරුමයේ තීරණාත්මක අංගයකි. අත්ගලෙහි සිටින මේ මහා ගජයන් සහ ඇතුන් පූජනීය රාජකාරියක ගෞරවනීය භාරකරුවන් ලෙස සැලකෙයි, විශේෂයෙන්ම ලොව ප්‍රකට මහනුවර ඇසළ පෙරහැරේදී.

දළදා මාලිගාවේ ඇතුන්ගේ පූජනීය කාර්යභාරය

ඇත්ගාලෙහි  සිටින ඇතුන් සාමාන්‍ය සතුන් නොවේ; ඔවුන්ට මහත් ගෞරවයක් හිමි වන අතර දළදා මාලිගාවේ දෛනික වත්පිළිවෙත් සහ වාර්ෂික සිදුවීම්වල අනිවාර්ය අංගයකි. ඔවුන්ගේ වඩාත් වැදගත් කාර්යභාරය වන්නේ වාර්ෂිකව පැවැත්වෙන ඇසළ පෙරහැරයි. එහිදී ශ්‍රී දළදා වහන්සේට උපහාර දැක්වීම සිදු කරයි. ශ්‍රී දළදා කරඬුව වැඩම කිරීමේ ගෞරවය "මාලිගාවේ ඇතුන්" ලෙස හඳුන්වන විශේෂයෙන් තෝරාගත් ඇතුන්ට හිමි වේ. විචිත්‍රවත් ලෙස අලංකාර කළ ඇඳුමකින් සැරසී සිටින මේ අලංකාර ඇත් රාජයා, දහස් ගණනක් බැතිමතුන් සහ නරඹන්නන් වශී කරවන දසුනක් වන මහනුවර වීදි ඔස්සේ යන මහා පෙරහැරේ පෙරමුණ ගනී.

ඔවුන්ගේ දෛනික ජීවිතය සහ රැකවරණය

ඇත්ගාලෙහි  සිටින ඇතුන්ගේ රැකවරණය සහ යහපැවැත්ම ඉතා වැදගත් වේ. ඔවුන්ගේ සෞඛ්‍ය තත්ත්වය ඉහළ මට්ටමක පවත්වා ගැනීම සඳහා ඔවුන්ගේ මාඋතුන් විසින් ඉතා සූක්ෂම ලෙස ඔවුන්ව රැකබලා ගනී. එමෙන්ම ඔවුන්ට විශේෂ ආහාර වේලක් සහ නිතිපතා පශු වෛද්‍ය පරීක්ෂණ සිදු කරයි. මාඋතුන් සහ අලියා අතර පවතින්නේ විශ්වාසය හා අන්‍යෝන්‍ය ගෞරවය මත ගොඩනැඟුණු ගැඹුරු බැඳීමකි. ඇතුන්ගේ දෛනික චර්යාවන් සම්ප්‍රදාය සහ නවීන රැකවරණය පිළිබඳව එකමුතුවක් වන අතර, එය ඔවුන්ගේ සෞඛ්‍යයට සහ ඔවුන්ගේ පූජනීය යුතුකම් ඉටු කිරීමට අත්‍යවශ්‍ය වේ.

ඇත්ගාල : ජීවමාන උරුමයක සංකේතයක්

 ඇත්ගාල යනු ඉතිහාසය සහ සම්ප්‍රදාය සුවිශේෂී ආකාරයකින් සුරැකෙන ස්ථානයකි. එය සියවස් ගණනාවක් තිස්සේ ගෞරවයට පාත්‍ර වූ ශ්‍රී ලාංකීය සංස්කෘතිය තුළ අලින් කෙරෙහි ඇති ගැඹුරු ගෞරවය මූර්තිමත් කරයි. අත්ගලෙහි පැවැත්ම නිසා මහනුවර ඇසළ පෙරහැරේ පුරාණ සම්ප්‍රදායන් අඛණ්ඩව පවත්වාගෙන යාමට හැකි වන අතර, එහි සිටින මේ මහා ගජයන් අතීතය සහ වර්තමානය අතර ප්‍රබල සම්බන්ධයක් ලෙස ක්‍රියා කරයි. එය හුදෙක් ඇත් පන්තියක් නොව, ජීවමාන උරුමයක අභයභූමියක් වන අතර, මේ මහා ගජයන්ගේ සහ ඔවුන්ගේ පූජනීය යුතුකමේ උරුමය ඉදිරි පරම්පරාවන් සඳහා ද රැකගැනීම සිදු කරයි.
